The Broncos have emerged as one of the best young teams in the UFFL, and should be challenging for the Super Bowl for the next several years. They have won 16 and lost only seven of their last 23 regular season games, and with 9 draft picks in the first five rounds in the 2010 draft, should be able to improve their squad even more next season.

The Broncos finished their 2009 season at 11-5, their best record ever. They won nine of their final eleven regular-season games to set the tone for a better 2010. After winning the wildcard game with a dominating performance over the Miami Dolphins, 37-18, they fell to the first seed Buffalo Bills when the Bills rallied back in the fourth quarter of the divisional round game, coming back from a 13-7 deficit to win 17-13.

BILLS BOUNCE BRONCOS FROM PLAYOFFS, 17-13
Aaron Rodgers Leads Fourth Quarter Comeback

September 6th, 2009: Amidst the wind and cold of Ralph Wilson Stadium, as the sun set on the Bills and Broncos playoff game, the Bills rallied from behind to beat the upstart Broncos and advance to the AFC Championship game, where they will host the New York Jets. Trailing 13-7 early in the fourth quarter, Aaron Rodgers took advantage of Ronde Barber's pick of Matt Schaub and led the Buffalo Bills on a 59-yard drive with the 20-30 mph winds at his back that took over six minutes off the clock and ended with the Bills ahead 14-13 with less than 8 minutes remaining in the game.

The go-ahead and eventual winning score came when Rodgers hit rookie running back Jamaal Charles on a screen pass that Charles took 25 yards into the endzone. The key play on the drive was the fourth and inches that Larry Johnson converted from the Bronco 49.

With the crowd back into it, the Broncos offense failed to convert a 3rd and two long pass to Roddy White on their ensuing possession, and were forced to punt it back to the Bills. The Bills barely converted a 3rd and six that Denver challenged but lost, and moved it to the Broncos 34, from where veteran John Carney kicked it through with just over one minute remaining in the contest.

BRONCOS BEAT MIAMI IN AFC WILD CARD GAME, 37-18
Lendale White Stars with 133 Yards Rushing

August 29th, 2009: Where did THAT come from?

That had to be the reaction of most Denver Bronco fans as the Broncos rushed for 247 yards on just 25 rushes, with Lendale White leading the way with 133 yards and two touchdowns on just 12 carries (11.1 per carry). Jerious Norwood rushed just six times but picked up 77 yards (12.8). Both White and Norwood had their longest run of the season, with White breaking off a 78-yard run in the third quarter for a touchdown, and Norwood picking up 50 on another run just before the half. The win was the first ever in the playoffs for the Broncos and puts them one game away from the AFC Championship game.

It was White's 78-yard touchdown run on the Broncos first play from scrimmage of the second half that busted open the game. The Broncos Jason Hanson had failed to convert a 33-yard field goal attempt just before the half, rendering Norwood's 50-yard run shortly before the missed field goal meaningless. The young Broncos could have come out flat in the second half, dwelling on that missed opportunity.

But instead, the Broncos took the second half kickoff and scored quickly courtesy of Lendale White. White took off around right end from his own 22, got some nice blocks from Heath Miller and Branden Albert to seal the edge, fought through traffic at around the 30, and broke away from the pack and raced 78 yards for the score to make it 31-10.

BRONCOS SHORT CIRCUIT CHARGERS, 33-10
Charlie Frye Throws 2 TD Passes

August 23rd, 2009: With nothing much on the line for either team, the Denver Broncos downed the San Diego Chargers, 33-10 in the final regular season game for both teams. The Chargers finished 5-11, and the Broncos ended at 11-5, their best record ever, with a wildcard spot in the playoffs guaranteed.

Charlie Frye threw two touchdown passes in the second quarter to jump the Broncos into a 17-3 halftime lead. After the Chargers scored on a Shayne Graham field goal of 24 yards to tie the score at 3-3 midway in the second quarter, Jerious Norwood returned the Chargers kickoff 71 yards to the Charger 23. After two incompletes, Frye hit Michael Jenkins for 10 yards and a big first down, then Heath Miller made a catch across the middle for the score to give the Broncos a 10-3 lead.

After the Broncos defense forced a Chargers punt just after the two minute warning, the Chargers had the Broncos bottled up back at their own seven yard line. But Frye hit Roddy White on a short slant which White took for 20, then White drew a pass interference penalty of 22 yards to move the ball near midfield. After a run by Norwood gained five, Frye dumped the ball to fullback Lawrence Vickers who got pushed out at the Charger 33 with 47 seconds left in the first half. Finally, Frye found Michael Jenkins running free across the middle and hit him in stride for the final 33 yards and the score. It was the second consecutive week Frye had driven the offense down the field to a touchdown pass in the final seconds of the first half.

BRONCOS BEAT CLEVELAND, 41-17
Charlie Frye Throws 4 TD Passes

August 16th, 2009: Schaub, Schwab.

With Matt Schaub and numerous other Denver starters benched for the upcoming playoff run, backup QB Charlie Frye threw four touchdown passes - three to Roddy White - in leading Denver to a dominating 41-17 win over the Cleveland Browns. The Browns fell to 6-9 with the loss and fell out of the AFC playoff race. Denver moved to 10-5 and clinched the fourth seed and first wildcard and a home game in the playoffs with the win.

With Cleveland leading 17-13 with 1:53 remaining in the half, having just scored on an excellent 13-play, 85-yard drive for the second TD connection between Jay Cutler and Chris Cooley, the Broncos wanted to answer back with a score of their own before halftime.

BRONCOS SURVIVE SCARE, BEAT BUCS 27-13
Late TD Drive Seals Win & Clinches Playoff Spot

August 8th, 2009: You can't win it unless you're in it. The Broncos are now in it - the UFFL Playoffs.

But it wasn't supposed to be this hard. The 1-12 Buccaneers weren't supposed to be this tough. They were supposed to roll over and die when the Broncos stepped foot on the field.

Nobody told the Bucs.

CHARGERS 4TH QTR FIELD GOAL DOWNS BRONCOS, 27-24
Denver Loses Second in Row

August 2nd, 2009: The Chargers took nearly nine minutes off the clock on a drive of 69 yards to set up what would prove to be Shayne Graham's game-winning field goal of 28-yards with 5:25 remaining in the contest. With a chance to tie Seattle for first place in the AFC West, the loss dropped the Broncos to 8-5, while the Chargers improved to 4-9 in the same division.

The key play of the game came after the Broncos had just bounced back from a 17-3 halftime deficit with two touchdowns in the span of less than a minute to tie the score midway through the third quarter. When veteran defensive end Alex Brown sacked San Diego quarterback Kyle Orton for a ten-yard loss to force a punt, the Broncos looked to have all the momentum and were primed to take the lead.

That momentum lasted until the next play.

SEATTLE SHREDS BRONCOS, 35-17
Seahawks Score 22 Unanswered After Halftime

July 26th, 2009: In a showdown for first place in the AFC West, the Broncos travelled to Seattle and ran into a steamroller disguised as the Seahawks football team, getting crushed 35-17. The Broncos fell to second place with an 8-4 record, and are still in good shape for a wildcard appearance, while Seattle moved to 9-3 and is now the front runner for the second seed in the AFC behind undefeated Buffalo (11-0 as of this writing).

It wasn't as close as the final score indicates.

The Broncos scored the last ten points in the game to cut into Seattle's dominating 35-7 lead, but the second half was all Seattle until the game was out of reach.

BRONCOS BUTT RAMS ON LAST SECOND FG, 30-28
Denver Surrenders 27-7 lead, Then Rallies For Win

July 15th, 2009: With a 27-7 lead entering the fourth quarter, the Broncos victory looked safe.

Wrong.

The Rams bounced back to score three touchdowns, the last two coming just over a minute apart to take a 28-27 lead with 5:26 left in the game. And when Matt Schaub, in trying to lead a comeback, was picked off for the second time in the quarter, this time by former Bronco Ron Bartell the Rams looked like they would be able to nail down the win.

Wrong again.

BRONCOS BEAT TEXANS, 31-13
Denver Wins Fifth in Row

July 10th, 2009: Lendale White scored twice on 14 and 9 yard runs and Roddy White caught TD passes of 41 and 13 yards to account for all four Denver TDs as the Broncos downed the Houston Texans in Houston, 31-13. The Broncos won their fifth in a row and raised their record to 7-3, while the Texans dropped their fifth in a row and fell to 2-8. The Denver win was costly, however, as they lost safeties Donte Whitner and Roman Harper in the game for at least the next two games.

The key play was the opening play of the second half, when rookie Quinton Demps 100-yard touchdown return was called back by an apparent phantom holding call. "We let out a big sigh of relief when we saw that late flag come from across the field," head coach Hank Sienzant said later. The touchdown would have cut the Broncos 21-13 halftime lead to 21-19 and given the Texans a chance to tie with a two-point conversion. But the Texans instead went three and out, and the Broncos quickly added a 37-yard Jason Hanson field goal after an 11-play, 70-yard drive off their own goal line.

When Adrian Peterson, who was held in check throughout the contest, fumbled on the Texans next play from scrimmage, the Broncos moved 24 yards to a touchdown in four plays, with the TD coming on a Schaub to Roddy White 13-yard connection across the middle.

BRONCOS DUMP RAIDERS, 34-10
Matt Schaub 14 of 17 for 251

July 4th, 2009: It was simply the best Bronco game in a long time, if not ever.

Coming into Oakland as the underdog and into a town where they had lost seven games in seven tries, the Broncos exorcised all their demons in taking apart the Raiders piece by piece, leaving the Oakland faithful to shake their heads in disbelief at the final 34-10 score. It was the Broncos fourth win in a row, their all-time best, and raised their record to 6-3. Meanwhile, the Raiders team that last year won the AFC West by three games with a 12-4 record, fell to 4-5. The Broncos solidified their hold on second place in the AFC West with the victory, and are just one game behind Seattle in the battle for first place.

In truth, it wasn't that close as the final 34-10 score indicated. Only a 81-yard drive for a meaningless touchdown in the final minutes saved the Raiders from a 34-3 shellacking.

BRONCOS BOOT SEAHAWKS IN OT, 20-17
Denver Raises Record to 5-3

June 25th, 2009: Thank God for sudden death overtime.

Three times the Broncos took the lead and three times Seattle came back and tied it up. Finally, when the Broncos took the lead for the fourth time, on Jason Hanson's 35-yard field goal in overtime, there was no time left for Seattle to play catch-up.

The winning field goal was set up by quarterback Charlie Frye's only two passes of the game, when he replaced MVP of the contest Matt Schaub after Schaub got his bell rung.

Frye's first pass was good for 20 yards on a short slant pass to Michael Jenkins and Jenkins' catch and run moved the ball from the Denver 47 to the Seattle 33. On the next play, Frye hit Heath Miller across the middle and Miller wasn't stopped until he reached the Seahawk 18. That was close enough for Denver's Hank Sienzant to send in Hanson to try the 35-yard game winner, even though Hanson had already missed from 35 (and 44) yards out.

BRONCOS BEAT BROWNS, 38-23
Schaub Throws 3 TD Passes, Runs For Another

June 20th, 2009: For the third time in four games, the Broncos pass defense was burned for a touchdown in the final seconds.

This time it didn't matter.

The Broncos had a 38-16 lead when the Browns added a meaningless touchdown pass from Jay Cutler to Brandon Marshall with no time left on the clock. It was the second touchdown pass from Cutler to Marshall in the fourth quarter, both coming after the Broncos had dominated most of the first through third quarters to grab a 38-10 lead going into the fourth quarter. With the win, the Broncos raised their record to 4-3, while Cleveland fell to 3-4. Depending on the outcome of the Carolina @ Oakland game, the Broncos could be tied for second in the AFC West.

BRONCOS POUND TENNESSEE, 41-9
Schaub 257 Passing Yards, 2 TDs Lead Broncos

June 14th, 2009: The Denver Broncos jumped to a 14-3 first quarter lead on two TD passes by Matt Schaub and coasted to the biggest win in their history, downing the Tennessee Titans 41-9. The Broncos raised their record to 3-3, while the Titans fell to 1-5.

Tennessee's only TD came in the fourth quarter, after the Broncos had a 41-3 lead and with the Broncos having emptied their bench on both sides of the ball.

The Broncos came out throwing, and their first two passes went to Roddy White and gained 30 and 22 yards, setting the tone for the game. Their first touchdown came on a one-yard TD pass from Schaub to rookie Tory Humphrey. After an exchange of punts, Tennessee put a 52-yard wind-aided field goal on the board off the foot of Rob Bironas. But the Broncos answered right back with an 80-yard drive, with Schaub connecting with Heath Miller for the score from six yards out to advance the Broncos to a 14-3 lead. Schaub completed six of six passes for 86 yards on the possession.

MIAMI DOWNS DENVER IN FINAL SECONDS, 27-23

June 8th, 2009: For the second consecutive game, the Broncos defense surrendered the winning touchdown in the final minute. Last week it was Peyton Manning to Calvin Johnson with no time left on the clock. This week it was Jeff Garcia to Torry Holt with 21 second left for the winning score. It was Holt's third TD reception of the game, all thrown by Garcia. June 1st, 2009: It came down to one play from 14 yards away. And in the end, the Broncos lost again.

On fourth and five from the Bronco 14, Peyton Manning hit Calvin Johnson on a slant pass and the second year receiver sprinted into the end zone for the winning touchdown, nullifying a great comeback by the Broncos and dropping them to .500 on the season after four games. Five Turnovers Doom Denver

May 8th, 2009: The Oakland Raiders defeated the Denver Broncos in Denver, 20-16, behind the strength of five Bronco turnovers that led to 17 Raider points. Matt Schaub, the Broncos starting QB who is holding onto his job by a thread, was intercepted only six times all of last year, but was victimized four times in this game, including one returned for a 38-yard TD by rookie cornerback Brandon Flowers for the game's first TD. The win gave the Raiders a 13-1 record over the Broncos in their all-time divisional series.

BRONCOS SIGN TOM SANTI AS FREE AGENT
Release Ben Troupe, Former Star TE

April 23rd, 2009: Despite the release of Ben Troupe today, it's shaping up to be crowded for the Broncos at the tight end position. Tom Santi joins starter Heath Miller, backups Tory Humphrey and Jeff Robinson at the position for the Broncos.

Beyond Miller, none of the others are proven receivers, but Santi's numbers are decent — he had 36 catches for 418 yards and three touchdowns in 2007 playing at the University of Virginia - the same school starter Heath Miller attended. And he consistently got better, catching 29 passes for 253 yards in 2006, 19 for 358 in 2005 and 13 for 155 in 2004.

PREVIEW OF BRONCOS 2009 SEASON

Overview:

April 18th, 2009: The Broncos have the seventh youngest team in the UFFL as of this writing, and one of the best young squads in the league. But they are in probably the toughest division in the UFFL (no team had a losing record in the AFC West last year) and will be in a dogfight for a playoff spot. Head coach Hank Sienzant says "nothing less" than a divisional title is acceptable this year, but that might be a tall order for this team. However, the Broncos are young and improving, and have nine draft choices in next year's first five rounds, so if they don't make it this year, their chances next year are most likely going to improve.

BRONCOS DRAFT DT and TE
Waive Two Veteran Linebackers

April 13th, 2009: Out with the old, in with the new. Denver selected defensive tackle Deljuan Robinson of Mississippi State in the ninth round of the 2009 UFFL draft. Robinson plays at 303 and is 6-3. He is not a run-stuffer, but an active penetrator. He gets off the snap quickly and has closing speed. He's a hard worker, and chases well. Think Tommie Harris rather than Ryan Pickett. He is almost assured of making the final roster, as the Broncos had only two defensive tackles on the team prior to his selection.
